Courage in the Fire

Courage in the Fire

The Jewish elite had been captured during the first of three captivities of the city of Jerusalem. King Nebuchadnezzar, who was the most powerful and world ruler at the time, had marched on Jerusalem, removed king Jehoiachin, and placed Zedekiah on the thrown. Thousands were taken captive to the city of Babylon. The next captivity would involve the destruction of the temple and the third a final cleaning house in the city.

Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azeriah were young men who found a way to be leaders among the Chaldeans…

However, before these two young elite males and females were taken hostage to the great city. They were integrated into the Chaldean culture and through time, it was thought, would become fully supportive of the Babylonian culture, lifestyle, and religious system. However, four young men are recorded in this book as being those who held to their belief system. Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azeriah were young men who found a way to be leaders among the Chaldeans, but continue to keep their faith in Yahweh. The Book of Daniel is a heroic story of faithful people who find a way, in a contrasting culture, to continue to believe and practice their faith—no matter what the consequences. It is a book that teaches us today that courage in the fire offers hope for salvation, a relationship with God, and an opportunity to lead others to greatness.
